Do you get on the Internet or the internet?

Right now you get on the Internet. But according to AP Stylebook, as of June 1, you’ll be getting on the internet. The word Internet used to be proper. Now it’s not. Some people aren’t too happy about it though. There is “The Internet” when referring to all the computers across the world that can communicate with each other. And there is an internet when referring to a disected group of computers that can only talk to themselves. Seems we need to leave well enough alone. What’s your thoughts?
